Volunteering - It Can Actually Extend Your Life
Editorial by Mysi Girdlestone Eagle NE Editor
With my MOPS Leadership Retreat this weekend and our Eagle PTE fundraiser at Yogurtini on Monday night, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on volunteering in the last few days.
I have always enjoyed volunteering. One of my favorite things as an adult has been attending one of the Eagle community events like Back to School Bash, Kids Carnival, VBS, or Bingo night. I'm reading this book right now called "Braving the Wilderness" by Brene Brown. In it she mentions a term, collective assembly. I think sums up how I feel when I get to participate in events like this. It is as an opportunity to feel connected to something bigger then yourself, to find delight, significance and harmony. I know that may seem a bit far fetched for a small town event but this town is everything to me. When I see us coming together to put an event on it makes me feel like we can do anything! I also know from being behind the scenes at some of these events, that it takes a lot to put them on and there never seems to be enough volunteers.
I feel like these days we are all so distracted and preoccupied with the screen in front of us, whether it is a computer or our phones. In the "Braving the Wilderness" book Brene Brown discusses Susan Pinker's research on this topic. She says that we can't substitute in-person interaction. It actually helps our immune system, sends positive hormones through our brain and bloodstream, and increases our lifespain. I know whenever I have a bad day I try to think about how I can help someone else and my mood gets lifted because I have taken my eyes off myself. So I want to recommend that you consider giving a little of your time to volunteering. It will make you feel better and it could just extend your life.
Here are just a few of the organizations in town that I know could use your help (I am sure this isn't a full list):
Eagle PTE - Meets monthly during the school year. Visit http://eaglepte.org or https://www.facebook.com/PTEagle/
Eagle Vision - Meets at Patina Joe second Thursday of each month at 7 pm Visit https://www.facebook.com/Eagle-Vision-299447590571/
Eagle Fire and Rescue - Visit https://www.facebook.com/EagleFireRescueDepartment/
Eagle United Methodist Church - Needs Greeters, Candle lighters, Bell Ringers Visit https://eagleumc.net or https://www.facebook.com/EagleUMC/
Immanuel Lutheran Church Visit - Needs volunteers for VBS - Visit http://www.immanueleagle.org or https://www.facebook.com/immanuel.eagle.ne/
Please email me at editor@eaglenebraska.com with other volunteer opportunities that you know of.
I know that, as Lysa TerKeurst says, you have to find Your Best Yes. It's unrealistic to think we can do everything. But if you are short on time I would ask that you consider donating to these causes. I know any of these organizations would greatly appreciate your help.
