$730,000 in cuts of which at this time a high proportion "appear" to directly affect services for elementary students

Plan on attending special meeting Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 6:30 (Waverly High School Media Center)

During the last PTE meeting we discussed teacher wish lists that are turned into the PTE so that we may see where we can be of some help.

It was brought to our attention at this meeting that the district is changing the curriculum in regards to reading material.  We currently have a few teachers spending their personal time going around to other libraries to check out as many books as they can to bring back to use at our school.

I am seeing that there are more and more teacher reductions, further para reductions and extra-curricular reductions.  This concerns me as I am not hearing of reductions in other areas (such as administration).  As the plan looks right now we are looking at 72% of the reductions being at elementary school level.  I know that schools around the area are all looking at budget cuts.  I look forward to hearing the explanations behind the administrations recommendations.

I am very concerned about the very near future of our elementary school and the education my children are receiving.  A few things have already been done away with such as RTA (Responsible Thinking Area).  I had LOVED this idea and implemented a lot of it in my own home.  I am upset that something so many parents felt so strong about was cut without warning or discussion.  After speaking with another parent recently it came to light that most parents didn't even know about this.  How are problems being addressed now?  How much class time is being spent away from the rest of the students to deal with one student needing extra guidance?  RTA was not a punishment but a way to have the children think about their mistakes and own them so they could learn from them.

My oldest spent her preschool years at a Montessori School.  I was worried about a lack of education moving to a public elementary school.  Seven years ago after meeting with one of the kindergarten teachers at kindergarten round up, my fears were put to ease and my daughter strived in her new environment.  It saddens me that I don't believe she would have the same opportunities soon.  Where does that leave my children in elementary school and soon to attend?  If our teachers are spending their "extra" time doing things the para's did who is spending the extra time coming up with ways to challenge our children.  In this day and age our children's education becomes more and more important.  With these new reductions I am afraid for the children that will fall through the cracks.  Is this the legacy we want to pass down to rural Nebraska?  Will our children speak softly about where they went to school because they are embarrassed or will they raise their heads high knowing they received a great education and feel prepared to go out into the world?

If you are parents with elementary children or teachers/paras who work with elementary children, I'm certain you may also have specific questions about the "recommended" reductions.  So - I hope to see you at the meeting on Thursday, March 25th at 6:30 pm (Waverly High School Media Center).

District Update 3-22-10

by Bill Heimann

March 21, 2010

District Update includes:

  1. High School Gym Floor Update
  2. High School Graduation Plans
  3. March 17 Special Board of Education Meeting Summary
  4. Special Board of Education Meetings Scheduled

On March 19th I learned more information about the ongoing investigation into the "gym floor mystery" at the high school. Additional water samples were taken from under the HS east gym. We drilled a hole in the HS commons area and found similar moisture levels as in the gym, so a water sample was taken from there also. We drilled a hole outside the gym (south side) and hit water at approximately 15 feet - conducted a water test and monitored levels in the hole the past few weeks. Supply line pressure tests were completed inside the high school last week.

The results of the water tests show that the water under the gym floor and the commons area is tap water! The exhaustive search inside the high school for the source of a leak did not show conclusive evidence of an internal leak. What does this mean? We will expand the search to the exterior of the building. This will take more time (and expense), but we have several options to consider.

Unfortunately, High School Graduation for the Class of 2010 will be relocated. Mr. Ricenbaw has been working on alternative locations, and has been examining all potential options. There are many factors to consider, we appreciate the continued patience - and we recognize that it is time to start sending out invitations to family and friends; a decision will be made at by April 1st (no fooling).

The Board of Education held a special meeting on March 17th. The Board took action to accept the resignations of veteran teachers, three of them will conclude their careers at Eagle Elementary. Mrs. Karen Whitenack, 5th grade; Mrs. Janet Ronhovde, 2nd grade; Mrs. Rita Neddenriep, Media Specialist. Mrs. Murleen Bellinger, High School Business teacher, submitted her resignation effective in May 2011. These teachers have many years of experience in District 145, and have impacted countless students. They have truly dedicated their lives to helping students be successful, and we recognize and thank them for their accomplishments.

The Board also accepted the resignation from Activities Director, Mr. Jack Guggenmos. During his tenure at District 145, Mr. Guggenmos has provided leadership to create an Activities Program that is recognized as one of the best. It is fitting that he was selected by his peers as Nebraska's Activity Director of the Year.

At the March 17th meeting, the Board heard about future needs in the district from the administrative team. The Board also received information about the budget (click here), and the future financial outlook for the district.

The Board has scheduled a Special Meeting on Thursday, March 25th in the High School Media Center (6:30pm) to receive feedback of possible changes to personnel or programs. All aspects of the district budget are under consideration as we face financial challenges. At this meeting, I will present information, and an Open Forum will be conducted to allow staff/patrons a chance to give feedback to the Board of Education. No action will be taken March 25th. On March 30th, a Special Board meeting is scheduled (6:30pm; HS Media Center) to consider possible actions regarding proposed budget reductions.

When we have limited resources, we have to make choices and prioritize. School districts around the state face budget challenges, as demonstrated in an article published in the March 21st edition of the Omaha World Herald.

Eagle Elementary Fun Run 2010!

Hello Runners!

Race season is quickly approaching!  Please join us for our 2nd Annual Eagle Fun Run on April 24th.  This year's run will again feature a 10K run and a 5K run/walk in an out-and-back-course run on the beautiful MoPac trail.  In addition to prizes for top three men and women in each race, we will again have a drawing at the conclusion of each run for some great prizes.  This year we are excited to be able to offer a dri-fit shirt option for our adult runners.  The shirts will be silver/grey with the same front and back commemorative design as our t-shirts.  If you would prefer a dri-fit shirt instead of a t-shirt, be sure to select your size, check the dri-fit option and include an additional $10.

Because of your generosity last year, we were able to raise nearly $1,500, which put the finishing touches on fundraising for new playground equipment at our school.  The new equipment is installed and enjoyed everyday by our school children!

Please share this registration form with your friends, family and co-workers.  We look forward to seeing you on April 24th!

Little Tykes Preschool Visits Morrill Hall!

The preschoolers at Little Tykes Preschool had a great time at Morrill Hall last week!  They went from room to room visiting and learning about the past.  They had a good time at the planetarium and then walking to the Student Union for some fresh air and lunch!  When they got back to Morrill Hall they were excited to start "digging" for fossils and learning about even more in the resource center.  After a quick run the gift shop we were on our way back to Eagle!

"Capital City Buddy Walk" on

October 2, 2010 at 8:00am.

Event: Capital City Buddy Walk
       "Who is YOUR buddy?"
What: Fundraiser
Start Time: Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 8:00am
End Time: Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 11:00am
Where: Antelope Park

The one-mile, Capital City Buddy Walk, hosted by the Down Syndrome Association for Families.

The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to bring together a wide range of concerned individuals to reach out to friends, family and co-workers to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome and to raise funds for education, research and advocacy programs. The walk has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to more than 280 nationwide (one in every state) with over 230,000 participants.

Many of you probably already know Natasha and James Dobbins.  They have two beautiful children Lily and Jimmy "Buddy".  Buddy was born with Down Syndrome as well as other complications.  He had open heart surgery on August 3, 2009. He had complications from a nicked lymph node...which caused what they called a chylothorax with plural infusion. Which means they nicked the lymph node and that caused the lining of his right lung to fill with fluid and lipils, which collapsed his right lung. We have dealt with apnea monitors, oximeters, oxygen, prescription formula, feeding tube and all kinds of stuff. RIGHT NOW... he's fine. He is almost 9 months and 13 lbs. He is still on lasix, prilosec, and sildenafil. But that should be short lived. All thats left is to deal with the down syndrome. Which I can deal with. ;)

The Dobbins family is inviting everyone to join them in the "Buddy" walk on October 2nd at Antelope Park.  They would love to see a big team from their town there to support them!
