 Volunteer of the Year 2010

State Farm is divided into zones. Rhonda's zone is the Heartland Zone. Rhonda had 507 hours just for scouts last year not including time at the church where the scouts meet weekly.

Each zone  selects someone each year.  This year's Heartland Zone Volunteer of the Year award was deservingly given to Rhonda Schwarzenbach.  Please join Public Affairs in congratulating Rhonda for her service to her community, specifically the Boy Scouts.

For Rhonda, volunteering for the Boy Scouts was a way to connect with her family.

"With three boys, I figured I needed to get involved in what they were doing," she said. "I didn't want to be left on the sideline."

Fourteen years later, Rhonda remains an actively involved parent. She also has expanded her volunteerism to include Scouting at every level. Her many activities range from taking part in monthly meetings and regular outings to fundraising and maintaining administrative paperwork. She participates in district-wide events, takes part in planning activities at several levels and serves in a number of adult leadership roles.

Today, Scouting remains a family affair. Rhonda's son Dylan, 20, is now an Eagle Scout. Her son Logan, 16, is about to begin pursuing his Eagle award and her youngest son Dawson, 10, will move from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts in May. Her husband Mitch also is an active adult leader and their daughter Madison, 8, is a Brownie. In addition to her Boy Scout involvement, Rhonda also leads Madison's Brownies troop.

"I enjoy watching the young people I work with grow up and build lasting relationships. Volunteering is about the people," said Rhonda.  "I love the relationships and the people involved in Scouts because they all believe that helping just one child can make a difference."

Public Affairs commends Rhonda for her dedication to making a difference in the world through volunteerism. Please join us in recognizing and congratulating Rhonda for this accomplishment.

For all the people who continued to follow our quest for the top spot in the Animal Rescue Site/Pet Finder Shelter Challenge. THANK YOU for voting for the Plattsmouth Animal Shelter every day. The contest has ended but we were at #14 in the State of Nebraska (last time I checked) so we may have finished higher. We didn't win anything this time but it was fantastic that we had so many people voting and rooting for us! The challenges run for 14 weeks. Here's the really good news ............. The NEW shelter challenge begins on Monday, May 17, 2010 and will continue through Sunday, August 22, 2010. Many grants will be awarded over 14 weeks and we're hoping you'll help us win some of them. Please, will you tell all your relatives, friends, co-workers,email buddies from anywhere and maybe even strangers on the street? Here are the very detailed and easy to follow instructions. By the way - it's an awesome web site with a great online store!

Please - go to:  http://www.amimalrescuesite.com/ and click on the button on the right "Click Here To Give - It's Free" - at this point you are giving free food to animals at many shelters. Now you'll get a message "Thank you your click has been counted!" On the top of the screen - "Help your favorite animal shelter win a prize!" Click the "Vote Today" Button The first time you vote you will need to enter all the information - Shelter name: Plattsmouth Animal Shelter Country: USA State: Nebraska City: Plattsmouth Click on "search" It will locate the shelter and display the name and location - when it does click "VOTE" One more step ...... Confirm your vote (name the animal) and you're done. After you do this the first time, you can save it in your favorites (it will retain all the shelter info) and the voting is much quicker the next time! IMPORTANT: Please remember to vote every day and help us gain on the leaders - thanks!   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The other fund raiser (also a type of contest) involves "Pet Enthusiast" Magazine. Happy Paws is selling subscriptions to the magazine and for every paid subscription we will get a portion which will help us support the shelter by providing for all the daily needs of our shelter pets. It also offers the financial support for Vet care for sick or injured pets and without it the shelter would not survive. Every single donation is very important to Happy Paws and the shelter. Without the support of many concerned citizens, the shelter would be "out of business" and the animals would go to the Nebraska Humane Society, where depending on their space availability, the animals future could end in euthanasia.   Here's the information:   We are offering subscriptions to this magazine for $24.99 a year. Of that $24.99, we will get $5.00. It will add up! It really is a great magazine!   Ordering is simple, you can go to their web site at http://www.pe-magazine.com/ and then click on the banner at the top that says "Subscription Fundraiser" -  it's fast and easy to do.  Be sure to click on the down arrow to highlight Plattsmouth Animal Shelter when ordering so we get credit for your order.   Thank you for your support. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LAST BUT NOT LEAST .............   Please visit the shelter web site often and do stop in to say "hello" during shelter hours. The animals love the attention! The web site is http://www.plattsmouthanimalshelter.com/ - check out everything on the shelter and then click on the green "Happy Paws" tab - read about us and make a donation if you wish.

Old Fashioned Father's Day in the Park

On Sunday, June 20th, the Plattsmouth Main Street Association is sponsoring an "Old Fashioned Father's Day in the Park" at Rhylander park in Plattsmouth. As you can see from the attached flyer, the featured event will be an old-time base ball game.  As a result we are recruiting players for our local team, "The Cass County Railroad Ruffians" and we invite you to choose a member of your organization as your representative on the team.

This will be a game of light-hearted fun and friendly competition. The rules of 1860 are a much less strenuous game than modern baseball and 9 innings will last less than 2 hours. In fact, the pitcher throws underhand and is encouraged to throw the ball where the batter requests it to be thrown. Also, it is an "out" if the ball is caught without having touched the ground OR after one bounce. So, as you can see, this game will move along quite quickly. I have seen the Wichita team play. They play for fun and love to "razz" each other and the opposing team. They told me that they win about 50% of their games.
This will require no financial contribution on the part of your organization. Our only hope is that you will bring your families out to enjoy the day and share in the fun and relaxation of a simpler era.

Please let us know by May 27th if you do or do not have have someone who is interested in playing on the Cass County Railroad Ruffians base ball team for this event.
Sincerely,

Jan Sandoz, Day in the Park Event Coordinator

"Capital City Buddy Walk" on

October 2, 2010 at 8:00am.

Event: Capital City Buddy Walk
       "Who is YOUR buddy?"
What: Fundraiser
Start Time: Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 8:00am
End Time: Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 11:00am
Where: Antelope Park

The one-mile, Capital City Buddy Walk, hosted by the Down Syndrome Association for Families.

The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to bring together a wide range of concerned individuals to reach out to friends, family and co-workers to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome and to raise funds for education, research and advocacy programs. The walk has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to more than 280 nationwide (one in every state) with over 230,000 participants.

Many of you probably already know Natasha and James Dobbins.  They have two beautiful children Lily and Jimmy "Buddy".  Buddy was born with Down Syndrome as well as other complications.  He had open heart surgery on August 3, 2009. He had complications from a nicked lymph node...which caused what they called a chylothorax with plural infusion. Which means they nicked the lymph node and that caused the lining of his right lung to fill with fluid and lipils, which collapsed his right lung. We have dealt with apnea monitors, oximeters, oxygen, prescription formula, feeding tube and all kinds of stuff. RIGHT NOW... he's fine. He is almost 9 months and 13 lbs. He is still on lasix, prilosec, and sildenafil. But that should be short lived. All thats left is to deal with the down syndrome. Which I can deal with. ;)

The Dobbins family is inviting everyone to join them in the "Buddy" walk on October 2nd at Antelope Park.  They would love to see a big team from their town there to support them!
