Monday night storm
Most of Eagle residents came through Monday nights storm with minimal damage. There were a lot of people dealing with water in their houses, branches and trees down and damage to property. Most of the damage occured east of Eagle. Elmwood/Murdock and Alvo were a few of the communities that received the brunt of the storm.

Play Ball!
Adult softball has been in session for 4 weeks now taking one for Labor Day weekend. Men and Women over the age of 18 from in and around the Eagle area have been catching, throwing and running on Sunday afternoons! Of course SOME of us have been "catching" our breath, "throwing" out our backs and "running" to our doctors Monday morning! All in all it's been fun not only playing but watching the other teams as well. Come on out Sunday afternoons anytime from 12:30 - 4:30 to cheer on your favorite team (we could use the encouragement)!!

Letters To The Editor
Letter #1:
Not being in on the know within Eagle and at the school I like reading what's happening in our village.
In the past few weeks I've attended a few PTE meetings to which I've found these sessions to be a cooperative interaction between the PTE members and school administration. However I have noticed something missing. There seems to be a disconnect between parents and school administration. All we want is what is best for our children. If the teachers have their "Wish Lists" they should send those to the PTE for review. These lists shouldn't be sent nor have to be sent "up the ladder" for approval.
When our eight year old daughter was two I was told we would love the Eagle Elementary School - which we did. However over the last few years we seen some rather interesting changes. Now - with over 20 years of management and 8 of those years being executive level management I know all about putting one's stamp on their new job. Sometimes those "stamps" are made just to be made and other times they are made with the best of intentions. In all sometimes not changing what is working is the best of all solutions. Sometimes it takes time, trial and error, and conviction to see the light when making a change(s).
We had an issue with the kids being able to play before school that was taken away from them in a free form context. However the kids are able to play after school without an issue or reservation. Really? The compromise was good. But was the change necessary?
We have a great school and one the students seem to love. With improved communication between to the parents from the administration we can have the best school in the state. Let's have that be our goal from here on out. In that, let's do whatever means are offered and necessary to get there.
Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Ken Peterson

Dear Editor,
For me, the most enjoyable aspect of the EagleNebraska website is the opportunity to see pictures of all the students I taught. They grow up so fast, but I still recognize each one, and it brings back fond memories of classroom experiences. It's just fun finding out what kids are doing over the summer. I wish I'd had an opportunity to see pictures of summer activities when I was still teaching. It would have provided me with many "starter…" ideas for those "reluctant" writers I encountered during the school year!!
I've also found the your editorials/articles informative and well written. Surely, most individuals have enough "common sense" to separate opinion from fact. As I recall, that skill is first taught in 2nd grade and continues to be reviewed at all grade levels until graduation from high school. Personally, my expectations for a community website and the Lincoln Journal Star are different. I just appreciate that someone is willing to take the time and energy to provide this service to a community.
I would like to see more letters to the editor. Heather Sams' & Ken Peterson's letters were excellent.
Our country is special because everyone has the opportunity to express opinions. We are so fortunate to have "freedom of press"! We may not agree with one another, but everyone has the right to speak up. Good ideas develop into "Great Plans" when all "sides" have equal opportunity for expression. If it feels "strange" or "uncomfortable" to be reading "opinions" about school issues on a community website, perhaps this is occurring because open dialogue, discussion and compromise are not taking place at the "planning" level…just "my opinion".

Eagle Elementary
If you have a 3rd through 5th grader you should be asking how math is going. As of this year Eagle Elementary no longer offers leveled math. Leveled math doesn't just effect kids who need extra help but those who are doing well and can move at a faster pace. When you have everyone in one class doesn't that also take time from the kids who wouldn't otherwise needed help but who aren't ready to move ahead either. My daughter says it's difficult to learn because there are so many kids who don't pay attention. She explained that was why three of her classmates get moved out so that it's a smaller class and those three are the ones who need help with math. Her and her peers are also waiting for a few more kids who are really good at math get moved out because they did last year.
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was adopted by every state in the United States. This program again not only addresses those that need help in a subject but those who can advance faster than their peers. Without organization and communication with administration, teachers, students and parents, how are these things getting figured out?
Communication. What happened to it? I am asking because I don't get half of what I use to brought home from school. My daughter was dissapointed that she forgot to work on her speech to run for student council. I would have helped remind her had I known anything about it. Is this because we have cut back on paper so much? If so, can we communicate through email? Just a thought. It has to be equally hard if not worse for the teachers.
I would suggest talking to your kids and asking them specifically about things you are questioning. Eveyone has a voice, some of us are just louder. What are you hearing? What are your thoughts? What are your suggestions? Give me your words and I will give them a voice.
Step Up for Down Syndrome!
Many of you probably already know Natasha and James Dobbins. They have two beautiful children Lily and Jimmy "Buddy". Buddy was born with Down Syndrome as well as other complications. He had open heart surgery on August 3, 2009. He had complications from a nicked lymph node...which caused what they called a chylothorax with plural infusion. Which means they nicked the lymph node and that caused the lining of his right lung to fill with fluid and lipils, which collapsed his right lung. They have dealt with apnea monitors, oximeters, oxygen, prescription formula, feeding tube and all kinds of stuff.
Natasha Dobbins is setting up a team for the Step Up for Down Syndrome. Team Bubba! Let's get Eagle together for this little boy!
