24 Days till Christmas!
I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! It's getting colder outside, black friday has come and gone and Christmas is just around the corner. Please remember the mitten tree at the Methodist Church on Main Street and the Food Bank next door. Our food bank is being used by more people than ever before.
2nd and 3rd graders to perform at Eagle Elementary December 7th!
The Foundation for Education does two grant cycles each year....in the fall and in the spring. The money for the grants come from donations and the operation of the Before/After School program.
Mrs. Divis from Eagle Elementary was awarded money from one of these grants to purchase her project.
| Title of Your Grant Project | Teacher(s) | Building | Project Description: Very concisely, describe your project. | Amount Funded |
| Ensemble tuner | Brady Rohlfs | HS | Mr. Rohlfs was awarded an ensemble tuner. He will position it at the front of the room, so that before rehearsing students are able to come up to the tuner and adjust their instruments themselves. | 750 |
| Technology Integration for Speech/English/Theatre | Blake Tobey | HS | This grant award will complete a media center that will now also include a laptop, clickers, speakers, and DVD player. Students will see the various forms of technology being used appropriately during in-class activities and then be taught how to work/manipulate these programs so they can practice presenting. Students will then use the technology in the way it was modeled to them. | 650 |
| Projector/ELMO | Mary Divis | Eagle | Mrs. Divis' classroom was one of the few without a projector. She will utilize the projector every day as it will improve performance of her students because it helps to meet the needs of all kinds of learners, especially visual learners. The use of an ELMO (digital visual presenter) will work in conjunction with the projector. | 1410 |
| Flip for Learning | Nancy Hopp | MS | Students, working with a partner or in groups, will be asked to film a short movie about "a day in the life of Waverly Middle School" with the flip cameras, edit the movie, and present it to the class. This project will allow the expansion of the Presentation Unit by adding another dimension to presenting projects. | 800 |
| I-Read, I-Pod, Am I-Fluent? | Melissa Kasuske, K-2 Title Reading/ELL Teacher and Heather Manning--1st Grade Teacher | Hamlow | These Hamlow teachers plan to use the i-Pod Touches to record the oral reading of their students. They will then be able to play back the reading so students can reflect on their reading fluency, expression, and accuracy. This will also provide the ability to save the readings over the course of the year and compare the readings for growth and share with parents. | 961 |
| Flips for Spanish | Kalee Stahr | HS | As a part of the language-learning process, students are required to do a great deal of production in the form of skits, movies, songs, and various other performances. The Flip recorders very simply connect to our computers and import for editing. In the past year in my students have recorded their own movie trailers, re-enactments of authentic legends from Mexico, skits in class, and they will do commercials this year. | 300 |

World Premiere in Manley, Nebraska!
The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley is bringing a world premiere to the stage. Opening on December 3, “Christmas at Leon’s” tells the tale of a bus full of holiday travelers who get stranded at a roadside diner during a blizzard. As we are introduced to the passengers, we discover that each one has a flaw or personal drama affecting his or her life. Everyone is able to find shelter and spiritual comfort at the diner owned by an odd little man named Leon.
The story and original musical score were both written by Mick Kovar of Lincoln. Mr. Kovar is a long-time friend of the Lofte having served on its board of directors and starred in several of its productions over the years. Lofte Artistic Director, Kevin Colbert is directing the show. Colbert and Kovar are old friends and have enjoyed working with each other on “Leon’s.”
Starring in the title role as the curmudgeon, Leon is Larry Bauers of Louisville. His three angelic waitresses are played by Renee Kovar of Lincoln, Lindsey Micks of Bellevue and Samantha Colbert of Weeping Water. Other players in the show include Bob Pinkerton of Weeping Water; Jamion Biesterfeld and Anne Riha of Louisville; Scott Pope of Eagle; Cynthia West Sheldon of Elmwood; Adam, Mick and Meagan Kovar and Brittney Ernesti all of Lincoln; Tom Lucas of Papillion, Virginia Howe Kincaid of Elkhorn and Jason France of Plattsmouth.
“Christmas at Leon’s” will run December 3-5, 10-12 & 16-19. Showtimes are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm. Sundays are 2pm matinees. Tickets are $16.
The Lofte is also doing a fundraiser in coordination with this event. Ticket holders can come to the Lofte 90 minutes prior to curtain to eat at Leon’s Diner. A home-cooked meal of meatloaf or hot turkey sandwiches will be served right on stage as the cast entertains and helps to serve the food. Tickets for the meal are priced separately at $25/plate. $15 of the meal ticket is tax deductible. Advance reservations for the Diner Experience are required.
The Lofte is located near the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway 1 just east of the village of Manley. The box office is open Monday through Friday 8am-12pm.
