Living History Day

Cass County Historical Society's Ninth Annual Living History Day will be Saturday, April 25. The event is free and open to the public.

At 10:00 a.m., by the Caboose at the end of Main Street, Ron Rookstool of Plattsmouth ,Vernon Grashorn of Louisville, and Larry Hogya of Omaha will demonstrate Blacksmithing. The Cook Log Cabin and the Burlington Northern Caboose will be open for tours. The Blacksmithing demonstrations will continue until 4:00 p.m. Hayrack rides between the museum and the cabin/caboose area will be available throughout the day.

The Museum at 646 Main will open at 12:00 and remain open until 4:00 p.m. Demonstrations in the museum will include spinning by Dee Hogya of Omaha and weaving by Linda Barnard Duncan of Plattsmouth. Throughout the day, Florene Nickles will be playing the 1893 Packard Reed Organ.

From 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., a May Basket Workshop for children ages 5 to 10 will be conducted by Cass County Retired Educators. The children will make a basket and learn about the May Day tradition. The last session will start at 2:30.

In the museum courtyard will be Quilting by Sandra Allgeier of Plattsmouth and Rope making by William Duff of Weeping Water. There will also be tables set up in the courtyard where people can make a candle or a rag doll. Farm equipment, including tractors, plows, cultivators, and corn planters will be on display in the shed in the courtyard

A new event for this year's Living History will be an antique tractor show on Main Street in front of the museum.

On Sunday, May 10, at 2:30 PM, in the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse,multi-instrumentalists, Greenblatt & Seay, will be performing a selection of original songs from their vast collection of hundreds of zany tunes that they have created together. This talented duo provides rich vocal harmonies, and will play a variety of instruments, including 5-string viola, fiddle, guitar, nyckelharpa, harmonica, banjo, bass, etc.

The family-friendly concert will be downstairs, followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and jam with Greenblatt & Seay. Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur, one mile south of Highway 34.

The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990. Music lessons, workshops, fiddle camps, and field trips are offered by Schoolhouse residents, Greenblatt & Seay, and are available by appointment.

Fiddle Camps in Nebraska

Registration is now open for the 2015 Schoolhouse Fiddle Camps, in the Old Avoca Schoolhouse, in Avoca, Nebraska. Deborah Greenblatt, championship fiddler, author of many fiddle collections, will help the campers get in touch with their inner fiddler. The course of study during the Schoolhouse Fiddle Camps will be designed specifically for the individual campers who sign up.

The June Camp (Monday, June 15 - Friday, June 19) is for folks who consider themselves beginners. The July Camp (Monday, July 13 - Friday, July 17) is for folks who consider themselves intermediate or advanced. Enrollment is limited to 10 fiddlers for each week, so that everyone will get individual attention.
