Lofte’s 40th Season Opens With ‘The Christmas Spirit'
When the Lofte opened its doors in 1977, no one could have imagined that forty years later local talent would still be treating southeast Nebraska residents with great theater productions. 2016 marks the ruby jubilee season for the community theater that is nestled in the middle of a corn field.
Frederick Stroppel’s ‘The Christmas Spirit’ is Artistic Director Kevin Colbert’s “Director’s Choice” and on April 8, it kicks off the year with a witty adult comedic drama. Don’t let the title fool you. This production has less to do with Christmas and more to do with one’s spirit. Julia Dowding (played by Weeping Water resident Margie Pinkerton) is visited by the Grim Reaper (Kevin Colbert, also of Weeping Water) on Christmas Eve. After Death is persuaded to give Julia one more day on earth, she invites him to be her guest at the Christmas festivities. Masquerading as a human, Death mingles with bickering relatives, friends and the local priest. He even partakes of eggnog and other party delicacies.
The cast includes Brandy Hall and John Bell of Papillion; Shari Hoelker, Dan Ryberg and Doug Rothgeb of Omaha; Shelia Snell and Andrew Schell both of Lincoln. Please be advised that while there are some funny scenes in the play, there are serious topics of conversation that are not suitable for young children. Director Kevin Colbert suggests that this play be rated PG-13.
Performance dates are April 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 and 17. Show times Thursday-Saturday are 7:30pm. Sunday performances are 2pm matinees. Reserved seats are $19 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 402-234-2553. The Lofte is located just 1/4 mile east of Manley, NE.

Free fiddle and Harmonica workshops will take place on Saturday, May 28, at the National Homestead Monument in Beatrice, Nebraska. At 10 AM, there will be a FREE fiddle workshop led by championship fiddler Deborah Greenblatt. At 11:00 AM, there will be a FREE harmonica workshop led by multi-instrumentalist, David Seay. haronicas will be available for purchase. Greenblatt & Seay are Master Artists with the Nebraska Arts Council, and participants in the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau. These FREE workshops are part of a full day of fun and free activities during the Tallgrass Prairie Fiddle Festival, formerly known as the Monumental Fiddle Championship.
Starting at 12 Noon, musicians will be competing for a record $3,350 at this year's Tallgrass Prairie Fiddle Festival! Music fans will be able to listen to and watch musicians; fiddlers and acoustic bands, as they compete at this year's music festival. The money will be spread over four categories: The Legends Division for the previous winners, Senior and Junior Divisions, and the Acoustic Band Category.
