Lou's Eagle Grocery is Now Eagle Grocery!

Lou is retiring. He has been a vital party of Eagle for 19 years. The store was purchased by Suzanne (Suzie) and Bud Yelkin. They will be keeping the hours 8 am - 7 pm from now. They are evaluating whether they will be open holidays going forward. They will still be providing the high quality meats that people often look for in the store.  If they don't carry something that you are looking for they would be happy to look into ordering it for you.  Just be sure to stop back by a few days later to pick up your items.

Due to a processing backlog at the USDA they are not able to accept SNAP benefits or EBT Cards currently.  They will honor these benefits as soon as they receive their certification from the USDA.

Surprise Party

Be sure to stop by the store on Friday, April 12th and Saturday, April 13th for a Farewell to Lou's Grocery Party.  Shhh...it's a surprise for Lou.  There will be free hot dogs, chips, and pop.

Deborah Greenblatt, championship fiddler, author of many fiddle collections, will help the campers get in touch with their inner fiddler. The course of study during the Schoolhouse Fiddle Camps will be designed specifically for the individual campers who sign up.

The June Camp (Monday, June 10 - Friday, June 14) is for folks who consider themselves beginners. The July Camp (Monday, July 8 - Friday, July 12) is for folks who consider themselves intermediate or advanced.  Enrollment is limited to 10 fiddlers for each week, so that everyone will get individual attention.

Mr. Erickson Speaks Out in Washington D.C.

Currently I am serving as Past President for the Nebraska Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NAHPERD). Part of my responsibilities in this role is to represent all physical education and health teachers in Nebraska. Recently I traveled to Washington D.C. with other physical educators from across the United States. This was truly an awesome and inspiring experience being a part of our country’s political process. Not only was I speaking for all Nebraska teachers but for all students as well. Our job was to speak with Congressional delegates to advocate/lobby for the federal government to make physical wellness a priority in schools.
On Capitol Hill we met with members of Congress to ask support for the passage of two legislative initiatives that will help children and youth become more physically fit. The two legislative initiatives that we were asking members of Congress for support on passing were the ESEA bill (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) and the Carol M. White Physical Education and Health Act.
These two bills are critical for physical education and health programs in our state. In the budget–cutting environment on Capitol Hill, our goal was to educate legislators about the many benefits of children and youth being physically educated. Not only are children and youth more physically fit, but research shows quality physical activity is linked to improved academic achievement as well. It is important that members of Congress understand the impact of sedentary living and appreciate the positive economic outcomes of a healthier, more active lifestyle.
On Capitol Hill I met with the following Congressional Delegates.

  • Congressman Adrian Smith
  • Dr. Michael Gamel-McCormick - Senior Education Policy Advisor to the Committee on Health and Education
  • Leanne Hotek - Legislative assistant to Senator Tom Harkin
  • Andrew Rothe - Legislative assistant to Congressman Jeff Fortenbury
  • Alley Mendenhall - Legislative Assistant to Senator Mike Johanns

I was very honored to be Nebraska’s representative for teachers and students. Note: This article was written by Mr. Stan Erickson, K-5 P.E. Teacher at Eagle Elementary.
